About the 2330 203 exam

Start as you mean to go on. That's a good way of looking at the 203.

The 202 should have prepared you well. Generally aimed at pure resistive circuits, the 202 gives you the underpinning knowledge you need to navigate the 203. With the 203 comes the introduction of a.c. supplies and the effects of reactance, both inductive and capacitive, on an a.c. circuit. Suffice to say, the combination does not make for quite such a straightforward calculation as the science that was covered previously during the 202.

Expect to learn what inductance and capacitance do to a circuit, what a phasor diagram is and why it is important, how a simple low pressure mercury vapour (fluorescent) luminaire works, Lenz's law, Fleming's rules and similar principles. Learn all about earthing, bonding, motors, three phase benefits and calculations, balancing loads and measuring voltage and current on three phase supplies.

As well as the science and principles, also look at risk assessments, emergency procedures, access equipment, techincal information and dangers on site. The exam requires a 60% SECTIONAL pass rate. You cannot achieve with an overall pass rate of 60%, you need to get at least 60% in both the health and safety section and the electrical science and principles section. Typically a student does well in the H&S but falls short in the science part.

A good grounding in the 203 is highly recommended as it forms the fundamentals of the 2330 301 exam, a rather tough nut to crack. Those who do well with the 203 tend to go on and do well with the 301 and save themselves a lot of hard work later on.
